A South African NGO has been granted permission by Bangladeshi authorities to erect 10 000 homes for Rohingya Muslim refugees in the Modhurchora area in Kutupalong.
More than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled their homes in Myanamar since the violence erupted in august seeking refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh, in what the United Nations calls a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing”.
The Al-Imdaad Foundation says the homes will provide Rohingya refugees with more permanent, durable and comfortable shelter solutions and will house up to 70 000 Rohingya men, women and children.
The homes will be fitted with solar panels, floor and mosquito nets and a gas stove including basic cooking utensils.
The Al-Imdaad Foundation’s Moulana Mohammad Motala says the current Rohingya situation in Bangladesh is dire.
“We have seen a great need for shelter for these people as this is going to be a very long term crisis. They are not going to go back home, they are here to stay in Bangladesh. We are appealing to our South African public to come together to assist to give these people and families a home”
Myanmar doesn’t recognize the Rohingya as an ethnic group, instead insisting they are Bengali migrants from Bangladesh living illegally in the country.
