Mashaba: Break-In at Joburg Data Centre an Act of Sabotage

November 12, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 12-11-2017

Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says the break in at the City of Johannesburg’s data centre in Braamfontein is a deliberate attempt to sabotage the initiative of building and securing the city’s own data and infrastructure environment.

It’s understood the criminals broke into the centre through an emergency exit door on the ground floor of the building on Sunday and made off with copper cables estimated to be around R2-million.

The City of Joburg is in the processes of building its own information and communication technology services which will now be delayed due to the break-in.

Mashaba says the data nerve centre where cables have been damaged and stolen provides ICT support to the entire city.

“Fortunately, the criminals were not able to access our partially completed live nerve centre, where we are housing our data infrastructure. We suspect that this was an inside job, judging from the way that the criminals gained access to the building. There are no signs of forced entry from the door they used.”

The City is offering a reward of R100 000 to any resident who can provide information that will lead to the arrest of the suspects.
