Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says he welcomes the arrest of a 37-year-old man who was selling illegal stands in Weilers Farm, South of Johannesburg.
It’s understood Mayedwa Njilana who was appointed by a consultant working for the City’s Housing Department in 2010 to assist with registration of title deeds was apprehended last week after selling two city owned stands for R30 000.
Njilana was also a community liaison officer for a contractor appointed by the Housing Department to build houses in Kanana Park, Weilers Farm in 2008.
He appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of fraud and corruption.
Mashaba’s spokesperson Lucky Sindane says this is the third arrest that police have made this year regarding the illegal sale of the city’s properties.
“Corruption has no place in this administration and we will work tirelessly, and in collaboration with various law enforcement institutions to ensure that the residents of Johannesburg receive the quality services they deserve.”
