SARS to Take Legal Action Against Jacques Pauw & Sunday Times for Zuma Tax Allegations

November 03, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 03-11-2017

he South African Revenue Service (SARS) says it may take legal action against investigative journalist Jacques Pauw and the Sunday Times for publishing details about President Jacob Zuma’s tax information.

Pauw’s book The President’s Keepers claims that Zuma failed to submit his tax returns for at least the first five years of his presidency.

In a statement, SARS say it is deeply concerned about the publication of confidential taxpayer information which is in contravention of the tax act.

“As a result, SARS is duty-bound to address the violation of the TAA by Mr. Jacques Pauw and the unsubstantiated allegation that Commissioner Tom Moyane is aiding President Zuma to avoid his tax obligations.”

It says the premise of the article hinges on the narrative that SARS cannot fulfil its mandate since the appointment of Commissioner Moyane because he is allegedly using his position to protect Zuma.

SARS also says the book and the newspaper report are devoid of any factual substance and that all former SARS officials mentioned in the article voluntarily resigned from the organisation.
