November 01, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 01-11-2017

At least eight people in New York City have been killed and 11 others injured after a driver ploughed into cyclists and pedestrians before being shot by police.

It’s understood a 29-year-old male driver of a rented pick-up truck entered a busy bicycle path on Wednesday on the West Side of Lower Manhattan before striking a number of people along the route.

The truck then crashed with a school bus, injuring at least two children and two adults.

After the collision, the driver exited the vehicle brandishing two imitation guns, at which point he was shot by a police officer.

Police commissioner James O’Neill told a press conference the suspect was wounded in the abdomen and transferred to a local hospital.

Multiple media outlets including CNN, report that the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” – Arabic for “God is greatest” – when he jumped out of his truck.

A paintball gun and a pellet gun were recovered from the scene.

Officials have described the incident as an act of terror.

The man has been identified as Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbekistan-born immigrant who went to live in the US in 2010.

CNN and The New York Times citing law enforcement sources, report that investigators found a note left by the suspect claiming he carried out the attack in the name of ISIS.
