The South African Communist Party (SACP) says the axing of General Secretary Blade Nzimande as Higher Education and Training Minister by President Jacob Zuma from the Cabinet without consultation with the Alliance is nothing but a response to the popular call, led by the SACP and COSATU, for the President to resign.
Zuma announced yet another reshuffle to his cabinet on Tuesday replacing Nzimande with Hlengiwe Mkhize, the former Home Affairs Minister.
The SACP has warned the move by Zuma places the tripartite alliance on “the brink of destruction”.
The party says the aim of any cabinet reshuffle must be to strengthen the capacity of the state, but this was not Zuma’s intention.
“The continued authoritarianism by Zuma, disregarding Alliance protocols and relations, has plunged the Alliance into unchartered waters.”
The SACP says the party’s call for Zuma to step down is based on the many problems of corruption, governance decay and state capture under his watch.
“The removal of Dr Nzimande from the Cabinet is part of Zuma’s manoeuvres to secure successful election of his ordained successor at the forthcoming ANC December national conference. In fact this action, more than anything else, also compromises and further tarnishes the image of the ANC itself.”
Responding to the axing of Nzimande, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe emphasised disappointment saying Nzimande “had done well in education.”
Mantashe added the ANC NEC was informed about the Cabinet reshuffle, but not consulted.
