“Friday the 13th” Means Nothing in Islam

October 13, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 13-10-2017

While Friday the 13th is regarded as a superstitious or unlucky day by many, In Islam the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said the day of Friday is the master of days, and the greatest of them before Allah.

The fear of Friday the 13th or the fear of the number 13 is known as Frigga triskaidekaphobia commonly associated with bad luck in Western culture.

Like many traditions, the unluckiness of Friday the 13th could have its roots in the Bible and Christianity. Judas was supposedly the 13th guest to sit down at the last supper before he betrayed Jesus. Christ was then crucified on a Friday.

Some theologians have even claimed Eve bit the apple in the Garden of Eden on a Friday, prompting God to expel her and Adam from the garden.

However Friday is a very important day for Muslims. It is more significant and more beneficial than any other day of the week and is regarded as a day of Eid.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Seventy thousands of my ummah will enter Paradise without being brought to account; they are the ones who did not ask for ruqyah or believe in omens (with birds) and they put their trust in their Lord.” (Bukhari)

Arabs used to consider the direction in which a bird flies to be a sign of good or bad fortune.

Radio Islam’s Ml Yusuf Omar says the belief that ‘Friday the 13th’ brings bad luck falls in the same category as this belief.

“As Muslims, we believe in Taqdeer. All conditions are from One Allah. A specific day, bird, black cat or broken mirror does not have the power to change our lives in any way.”

Ml Omar says the hadith is an indication from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) of a great reward for those who will stay away from such beliefs.

As far as ‘ruqyah’ is concerned, there is nothing wrong if one uses verses of the Qur’an or the name of Allah for healing purposes. Some scholars say this refers to those that invoke others besides Allah.
