Calm has been restored to Lenasia South after a Red Ants eviction that left two people dead and many injured.

It’s understood the violence erupted on Friday when the Red Ants started demolishing shacks and evicting illegal dwellers from Univille.

Police and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD)say they are  monitoring the area.

The police’s Hector Netshivodza says the area is calm and that no incidents of violence were reported on Saturday.

“The eviction was immediately suspended on Friday after two people died and many were taken to hospital after the violent clash between the Red Ants and the illegal occupiers of the land.

Netshivodza says police are investigating two cases of murder and a number assault cases.

Meanwhile Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Paul Mashatile has called for calm and restraint from the community and has sent his condolences to families of those who lost their lives.
