Abbas Urges UN General Assembly to End Apartheid for Palestinians

September 20, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 20-09-2017

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has told the United Nations General Assembly that while South Africa has been freed from the clutches of Apartheid, Palestine is continuing to suffer from the cruel policy of segregation.

Abbas was addressing world leaders at the 72nd sitting the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

The Palestinian President says Israel is evading its responsibility to end its occupation of Palestine’s territory.

He says the UN bears a legal, political, moral and humanitarian obligation to end Israeli occupation, adding that Israel knows that its occupation breeds incitement and violence.

“While we call to end the occupation, Israel incites and pretends there’s no Palestinian partner for peace.”

Abbas criticized the U.K. for “failing to rectify the grave injustice it inflicted on the Palestinians when it issued the Balfour Declaration in 1917.”

“Until this moment, the British government has not taken any step to correct this historical injustice and has neither apologized to the Palestinian people nor compensated them, nor has it recognized the state of Palestine.”

Abbas also addressed the installation of security checks by Israel at the entrance to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound.

“Israel’s attempts to change the historic status quo in Al-Quds and in particular the status and integrity of Al-Aqsa Mosque can only be described as playing with fire. Don’t ever try to go towards a religious war, it is really dangerous, for you and for us, we don’t want it.”

Abbas slammed Israel over the construction of new settlements “everywhere,” saying they were putting the two-state solution in jeopardy.

“There is no place left for the state of Palestine and this is not acceptable.”

Abbas said that “our problem is with the Israeli occupation and not with Judaism as a religion,” asking if “the world can accept an apartheid regime in the 21st century?” and “has the international community surrendered to the fact that Israel is a country above the law?”
