Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Ki says while her government has made major strides to restore peace in the country and ensure better relations between Muslim groups and Rakhine communities, it’s not their intention to evade responsibility.
Kyi says she “feels deeply” for the suffering of “all people” caught up in conflict scorching through Rakhine state while addressing the country on the live TV address in Naypyitaw, Myanmar yesterday on the growing crisis of the Rohingya Muslims.
She has been heavily criticized for her near silence as violence erupted in the region and saw hundreds being killed in security raids and almost 410,000 fleeing to neighbouring Bangladesh.
The latest violence was sparked by an armed attack blamed on Rohingya militants on police posts last month.
The United Nations says the security crackdown that followed by the military is “ethnic cleansing”, but the military denies targeting Rohingya Muslims.
Ki says government has been working tirelessly to restore calm.
“Even before these outbreaks took place, we had established a central committee for rule of law and development in the Rakhine. But in spite of all these efforts, we were not able to prevent the conflicts from taking place.”
Leaders from the UK, US, France, Canada and Australia had urged Suu Kyi to push for an end to violence against the Rohingya.
