DIRCO Appeals to Myanmar to Address Rohingya Crisis

September 13, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 13-09-2017

The International Relations Department (DIRCO) has appealed to Myanmar to address the situation of the displaced Rohingya.

In a statement Dirco says the South African government has expressed deep concern about the plight of over three hundred thousand Rohingya civilians who have fled their homes in Myanmar.

Dirco says it supports the statement by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urging the Myanmar Government to take responsibility and provide security to the Rohingya.

Dirco’s Clayson Monyela says government has also requested for humanitarian agencies to be granted access to affected communities in need of assistance and protection.

“The South African Government urges all parties to halt the violence in order to avoid further human suffering. In particular it appeals to the Government of Myanmar to address the current situation in Rakhine state within the ambit of the law, upholding the rights of all those living within its borders.”

Monyela says South Africa is mindful of the challenges confronting the Government and the people of Myanmar and has full faith it will continue the process of democratisation and political reform in order to deliver sustainable development, stability and to contribute to national reconciliation.
