Israel REFUSES to Halt Arms Supply to Myanmar Amid Rohingya Crisis

September 12, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 12-09-2017

While UN human rights officials have urged Myanmar to end the “brutal security operations” against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state, calling it “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing”, the Israeli Defence Ministry has confirmed that Israel will continue to export weapons to Myanmar.

Israel’s decision is in defiance of international embargoes on arms exports to the beleaguered country.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) says there are a number of Israeli companies including Elbit Systems & TAR Ideal Concepts reportedly training the Myanmar forces in Rakhine state on Israeli “pacification” strategies to repress the Rohingya.

The PSC’s Terry Crawford-Browne says the European Union, the US and the British have had arms embargoes against Myanmar since the 1990’s, but Israel has continued to flout the moratorium.

Crawford says Israel has had a long relationship with the dictatorship with Myanmar.

“There have been a few conscientious Israeli peace activists who have raised the issue. There is a case actually coming up in Tel Aviv later this month that there is increasing concern about the role of Israel in selling weapons to 130 countries around the world and they market them as battle tested and proven on Palestinians”

Crawford says the PSC will be marching to parliament in Cape Town tomorrow to protest against the silence of communities against the atrocities being inflicted upon Rohingya Muslims by Myanmar.

“We hope that this will re-enact some of the feelings 28 years ago on the 13th of September 1989, Capetonians banded together to march for peace to put an end to the apartheid system.”

He says the South African government has been largely silent on the Rohingya crisis but hopes this can change
