The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa says it is deeply disturbed as the international community continues to turn a blind eye to the Myanmar government’s crackdown of Rohingya Muslims.
Since the violence erupted last month more than 85,000 Rohingya Muslims have been reportedly fled to neighbouring Bangladesh to escape the persecution, 100,000 remain internally displaced and more than 40 villages burnt to the ground.
In a statement, Secretary General of the Jamiatul Ulama Moulana Ebrahim Bham says the atrocities are tantamount to ethnic cleansing.
“As South Africans, having lived through a racist and brutal oppressive regime, it is our duty to stand up for those still living under apartheid. Burma should not be allowed to continue this genocide of Rohingya.”
Myanmar officials blame the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) for the violence, but fleeing Rohingya civilians maintain that a campaign of arson, rape and killings by the Myanmar army is aimed at forcing them out of the country.”
Ml Bham says the Jamiatul Ulama views the atrocities against the Rohingya in a very serious light.
“The Jamiatul Ulama calls upon the government of the country, our South African government, the international community to stand up for the right of the Rohingya Muslims and to put a stop to this genocide. We call upon the Imams to perform Qunoot-e-Nazila, the Ummah to increase their dua. There’s also attempts made to secure the rights of a march next week Friday Insha’Allah. We hope that Allah removes the oppressive with regards to what they are doing and alleviate the plight of the Rohingya Muslims. Remember this is all our responsibility.”
Despite the widespread accounts of atrocities which some world leaders say is a genocide, journalists and UN observers are not allowed in the country, so cannot independently verify the claims.
