Now that National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete has announced that the motion of no confidence vote in President Jacob Zuma will be by secret ballot, questions have been raised about what will happen if it succeeds.
This a 7 step guide to what will happen if a vote of no confidence succeeds:
- If the vote succeeds, the president, the cabinet and deputy minister must resign.
- The speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete will become the acting president of South Africa.
- The Speaker of parliament must take an oath to protect the constitution and the sovereignty of the republic.
- The speaker will maintain all responsibilities and powers of the president.
- The Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng must provide a date on which the National Assembly will elect a new president and its members.
- If there is more than one candidate, the election will be done by secret ballot.
- If the new president is not elected in 30 days, the Speaker must dissolve parliament and the country must go through new general elections.
The motion of no-confidence debate in President Jacob Zuma is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
