A world renowned private investigator has told the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria the original probe into the death of anti-Apartheid struggle stalwart Ahmed Timol was a cover-up of the truth.
Frank Dutton was tasked by the Timol family to find fresh evidence in order to reopen the inquiry into the death of Timol on October 27, 1971 and was ruled a suicide in 1972.
Police claimed Timol jumped to his death from the 10th floor of the 13 storey John Vorster Square 46 years ago.
However‚ Timol’s family have refused to believe that he killed himself and asked for the inquest to be reopened.
Dutton testified that the people that had been detained had not been called as witnesses in the original inquest even though they were available.
He believes this was part of a cover-up.
“If the South African police wanted to demonstrate to everybody that this was indeed a suicide and not a killing through torture or any other means, then they should have started an impartial investigation.”
Dutton says the scene should’ve been photographed
“Hundreds of photographs, every aspect of the scene should have been photographed. While the body lay there, yes.”
Since the inquest began, several witnesses have told the court that they believe Timol was pushed out of the building’s window.
