Three of the four lions that escaped from the Kruger National Park have reportedly been shot dead.
The big cats were last spotted in Matsulu, a village outside the park on Sunday
On Tuesday, SANParks said the lions were probably driven out by population pressures.
Spokesperson Janine Raftopolus told eNCA: “It’s actually three lions that were discovered on a farm late last night where a farmer encountered the three eating on one of his cows and proceeded to shoot one of the lions and injure another.”
Raftopolus says a helicopter was then dispatched to search for the remaining two lions.
“With the Mpumalanga Parks Tourism authorities we went in and had to kill the wounded lion because it become very dangerous and with the last one remaining and because he had come into contact with the farmers livestock, we assessed the situation and the best decision was taken to actually put down the wildlife.”
Raftopolus says evidence from the lions tracks indicate that only three animals may have escaped from the Kruger National Park instead of four.
In May 2017 five lions escaped from the park , four of them were recaptured while one remains on the loose.
