Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to Attend & Address Eidgah in Lenasia

June 25, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 25-06-2017

While concerns have been raised about Cyril Ramaphosa addressing the Eid prayer in Lenasia, his office says the deputy president will attend the celebration to render a message of support to the Muslim community following the end of the blessed month of Ramadan.

Ramaphosa is expected to address the Eidgah on Nirvana Drive tomorrow morning.

The Eid Prayer and celebration is the largest assemblies of the Muslim community in South Africa and signifies the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan where Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.

Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Tyrone Seale told Radio Islam the deputy presidents remarks will emphasize and focus on the relevance and importance of the Muslim community as a South African society.

“He will also be highlighting some of the virtues of Islam by which all South Africans can conduct themselves.”

Seale says while Ramaphosa recognizes Eid as a religious day of celebration in the Muslim community, the deputy president has a responsibility to advance social cohesion.

“By associating himself even with such a brief visit with this event, he is advancing the governments intention of ensuring that all South Africans adopt good values and good practices by which we call can live.”

Last year Ramaphosa addressed the Muslim community at the Eid prayer in Pretoria.
