Child Protection Week Kicks Off in SA

May 31, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 31-05-2017

While South Africa acknowledges Child Protection Week (CPW) this week, it’s emerged that South African children feel anything, but protected.

Police statistics show that one of three children in South Africa fall victim to physical, sexual or emotional abuse before their 18th birthday.

The statistics also show that every three days a child is raped or murdered in South Africa.

CPW was initiated in 1997, in order to raise awareness and to mobilise all sectors and communities towards the perspective of a holistic development and the care and protection of children.

It has become an annual campaign to educate and mobilize communities to put children first.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the Gauteng Social Development’s Mbangwa Xaba says the statistics are scary and children are vulnerable and in danger.

“This is the sad part because this is the future of our country. When in fact what you are raising is the scratch of the surface. Beneath that there are far much more frightening statistics.”

Xaba says the outcomes of child protection awareness campaign are to uphold Government’s commitment to protect and promote children’s rights in partnership with civil society and communities taking ownership for care, safety and protection of their children.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development in partnership with Department of Justice, Home Affairs, Lawyers for Human Rights and Adoption Coalition will launch a CPW with a Provincial Indaba on the 01-02nd of June 2017.
