More Arrests Expected in Lenasia Hijacking Syndicate

May 25, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 25-05-2017

Police say they expect to make more arrests in connection with a car hijacking syndicate in Johannesburg.

A 43-year-old man and 33-year-old woman were arrested in Lenasia following a multi-disciplinary operation consisting of police and other crime intelligence units.

Police recovered R750 000 cash, a police radio, two illegal firearms and nine luxury vehicles worth R7 million.

Abinier Nhavonts and Siyyid Charloos appeared in the Lenasia Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of stolen vehicles.

Charloos was released on R100,000 bail while Nhavonts was remanded in custody.

The police’s Vishnu Naidoo says they cannot rule out the possibility of more arrests.

“If you look at the nature of the vehicles that are suspected of being hijacked and the possibility of these vehicle being destined for neighbouring countries, in all likelihood there is a chance that there could be more arrests.”

Naidoo says the illegal firearms have also been sent for ballistic tests to determined if they were used in other crimes which could result in additional charges.

The duo will be back in court on 1 June.
