Ethekwini Water says it will try and ensure water is available during the holy month of Ramadan if there are no contraints on the system.
With the Islamic month of Ramadan just a week away, concerns have been raised that the heavy rains experienced through KwaZulu-Natal may have had little or no effect on major dams in the Umgeni system resulting in water outages during this period.
Umgeni Water and municipalities including eThekwini, Umsunduzi and Umgungdlovu have applied 15% restrictions on usage to conserve water.
Deputy Mayor Fawzia Peer told Radio Islam, the water department will make water available during the holy month if all goes according to plan.
“I’ve had a meeting with the water department, the head of water Ednic Msweli and we finally came to a decision that there will be no restrictions in the month of Ramadan hopefully. But it all will depend whether we get enough rain. The situation can change.”
Peer says there are contingency plans in place if there is a water restriction or outage.
“I would prefer people to call me if there is a problem. We have water tankers but it may not reach every person or every street. But worse for worse, we can experience 10pm to 3am shut off of water if things go worse and if reservoirs do not have enough water.”
Peer has urged communities to ensure they stock up on water to assist them during the month of Ramadan.
