Freedom Movement to Focus on Removing Zuma & Protecting Constitution

May 02, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 02-05-2017

Humanitarian activist Catherine Constantinides says the hackling of President Jacob Zuma at a May Day rally in Bloemfontein is a reflection of the sentiment of society at large against the president.

Constantinides was speaking to Radio Islam about the Freedom Movement group which is made up of opposition parties such as the DA, UDM and COPE; labour organisations such as Fedusa and Solidarity; faith-based organisations and civil society groups.

Constantinides says the movement would focus on removing Zuma from office, protecting the Constitution, restoring power to the people of SA and safeguarding the state as an instrument of transformation, and the socioeconomic development of all.

“So the Freedom Movement was really a collaboration of likeminded individuals from those different sectors making sure that we have a stronger voice, united we stand to really push the agenda of making sure that we protect our constitution and we protect the citizens of our country.”

While President Jacob Zuma has labelled the marches against him as racist, Constantinides says it’s sad when people play the race card.

“We always use race as a Trump card to try to divide. So we have to make sure we look through that which has been said several times. Sometimes when you’ve got nothing to say you find something to say because you have to find a way to defend what is going on around you.”

Constantinides says while rally’s, marches and public statements reflect only one side of the work that needs to be done, roundtable intensive discussions, debates and planning forward is very much a part of what the movement is doing.
