Kathrada Foundation Condemns Rumours & Fake News of Stalwarts Death

March 18, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 17-03-2017

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation has dispelled malicious rumours that the anti-Apartheid icon has passed away.

The foundation says Kathrada’s condition remains unchanged and is still in hospital.

The 87-year-old anti-apartheid icon was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital last week for dehydration but doctors picked up a clot on the brain, which was removed.

The foundation’s Neeshan Balton has appealed to the public from spreading unverified reports and fake news on Kathrada’s health.

“We condemn these rumours and request the public to refrain from reposting or spreading fake news or any updates that cannot be verified. We reiterate our commitment to providing regular and accurate updates about Mr. Kathrada’s condition both to the media and the public.”

Earlier this week, Balton told Radio Islam Kathrada had contracted a bout of pneumonia and suffered minor seizures and that progress was slower than what had been hoped for, but he was fighting to get better.

Balton thanked the public for the various initiatives that have been organized to wish Kathrada well.
