Dismissal of Islamophobia Complaint by CRL Commission Shocking

March 15, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 15-03-2017

Social cohesion advocate and anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee says the decision taken by The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Commission) to dismiss a complaint of Islamophobia is shocking.

The Thaba Tshwane Islamic Centre Trust laid a complaint to the CRL Commission in August last year about the challenges they were facing to build a masjid in Valhalla in Tshwane as well as social media statements allegedly made by Richard Botha which they claim bordered on Islamophobia.

Former Tshwane Mayor Sputla Kgosientso Ramokgopa officially handed over the title deed for the piece of land to the Muslim community of Valhalla for the building of a masjid last year.

Last year Abramjee told Radio Islam Botha compared the masjid to a brothel on a radio show and also never declared he was a member of the CRL Commission which was only discovered ahead of the meeting.

In a statement the CRL Commission says the complaint does not fall within the scope and mandate of the organisation and have therefore referred it to the National Assembly of South Africa for review.

Abramjee says the decision taken by the CRL Commission is shocking.

“Clearly it falls within their mandate. I think they are just too scared to act against one of their own. Richard Botha is a member of their commission and for them to really now address the matter National Assembly is a copout.”

Abramjee emphasised that the CRL Commission also procrastinates on dealing with issues saying he’s waiting for decisions on other complaints about Islamophobic comments posted on social media.
