Kathrada in Good Sipirits After Op to Remove Blood Clot on the Brain

March 05, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 05-03-2017

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation says the anti-apartheid struggle stalwart is in a stable condition after an operation to remove a blood clot on the brain.

In a statement the foundation says 87-year-old Ahmed Kathrada
was initially admitted for dehydration at a Johannesburg hospital yesterday but doctors later picked up the clot, which has subsequently been removed.

The foundations Neeshan Balton says despite being ill prior to the operation, Kathrada was in good spirits.

“Doctors last night indicated that the operation was successful and he is in a stable condition. However, it would be some time before Kathrada fully recovers.”

Balton says that due to hospital regulations and the necessity for a relaxed period of recovery, only visits from the immediate family would be allowed to visit the struggle icon.

Kathrada along other struggle icons Nelson Mandela, Andrew Mlangeni, Denis Goldberg, Walter Sisulu and Govan Mbeki amongst others were sentenced in 1964 to life imprisonment on Robben Island during the famous Rivonia Trial.
