Trade Route Mall says while it has listened to shoppers concerns about parking fees and has reduced the rates at the shopping centre, the management did not succumb to pressure from the community or residents of Lenasia to do so.
Residents and shoppers of Lenasia have voiced their anger on social media about the exorbitant parking tariffs with many saying they are being ripped off by the mall.
Last month a report by Radio Islam revealed that parking tariffs at the Trade Route Mall in Lenasia is on average more expensive compared to other shopping centres.
Trade Route Mall says they have replaced the entire parking system with new equipment from an Italian company called FAAC which will speed up transactions & barriers reducing queues and traffic flow.
Trade Route Mall’s Yaseen Valli says they have managed to convince the parking company to reduce the sliding tariff structures from the original charges on both the open & undercover parking.
“After much deliberation and a lot of arguing with FAAC, we managed to convince them to bring the rates down. I want to officially state that it was not because of external pressure or customer pressure. It’s purely and totally our own identification.”
At the same time Valli told Radio Islam that a portion of the parking income is distributed to a charity of their choice on an annual basis.
While time will tell if shoppers are receptive to the new tariffs, the new parking system does not retain a parking ticket when shoppers exit the boom gates thereby creating a potential litter problem if the ticket is discarded.
Trade Route Mall says that from the 1st of March the following changes would be made to the parking tariff structure.
- Both the open and under cover parking will allow a 15-minute drop off period where after the first tariff will come into effect.
- There will be a flat rate of R8 on weekends and public holidays when utilizing open parking facilities.
The Trade Route Mall will also be having a free parking day on the 18th of March with planned activities inside the parking lot for shoppers.
