Sheikh Abdul Salaam Bassiouni has told Radio Islam he never imagined he would see the inside of a prison cell at the age of 65.
Bassiouni arrived back in South Africa on Sunday after being detained for more than two years at the notorious Torah prison in Egypt where high profile political prisoners are kept.
Bassiouni was freed in April last year but had to remain in Egypt as part of the conditions of his release.
He was arrested by Egypt’s national security at Cairo Airport in December 2014 for allegedly being part of the Muslim Brotherhood, a claim his family denies.
Bassiouni says being in jail is not easy and was totally shocked when he was escorted from the airport straight to a cell at the Torah prison.
“I find myself in-between steel buildings. I can’t come out from the rooms, I can’t greet anyone, staying in a small room with many people in the room is very difficult.”
Bassiouni says he was falsely accused by Egyptian authorities.
“They put us in the jail without any reason, without any problem from our side, I don’t know why. Allah, He will ask them Insha’Allah in the hereafter about that.”
Bassiouni says his incarceration was a test from Allah and the Ummah must understand Islamic history has recorded that many Prophets (PBUT), companions and Islamic scholars were also jailed for no apparent reason.
Bassiouni has thanked the entire Ulama fraternity, the community and all South Africans for remembering him in their duas and supporting him and family during his detention.
