A Pakistani national has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after attempting to smuggle R10-million out of the country.
The 60-year-old was nabbed yesterday by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime and Customs officials during a routine search at a departure check point while boarding an Emirates flight to Dubai.
Hawks spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mulamu says travellers are only allowed to carry a maximum of a maximum of R25,000 in South African currency or R150,000 in foreign currency while travelling abroad.
“The authorities recovered US Dollar money equivalent to R 10 million concealed in a foil inside the suspects travelling bag.”
The Durban based suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
This is the second such incident in two months.
In October, Madiha Rafiq was arrested at the same airport on the same charges.
Rafiq is out on R40 000 bail and his case has been postponed to February 2017 for further investigation.
