Black Friday: Is it Permissible for Muslim to Partake?

November 25, 2016

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 25-11-2016

While thousands of South Africans swamp shopping centres for bargains on Black Friday, questions have been raised about whether it’s permissible in Islam to partake in the shopping spree.

Mufti’s Shafique A Jakhura and Muhammad Mangera from the Darul Ihsan Islamic Services say the concept of “Black Friday” is purely a business marketing concept and has no pronounced connection with any religion or religious practice.

“As such, it would be deemed permissible for Muslims to trade in and benefit from such promotions.”

The honourable Mufti’s however emphasize that Muslims should bear in mind that making purchases and taking advantage of promotions and sale items should be done according to need and with moderation.

“One should exercise caution and avoid wasting time in frivolity of the market place and impulsive buying of goods one does not require based on availability and greed.”
