There has been outrage after a Limpopo pastor was photographed spraying insect killer over members of his congregation over the weekend.
Prophet Lethebo Rabalago of the Mount Zion General Assembly church insists the use of Doom is a healing method that can cure people suffering from various illnesses and “exorcise demons” from his congregants.
Rabalago has defended his methods, saying the use of the insect killer is harmless.
The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CLR) has condemned the Doom prophet for using multi-insect spray to heal his followers
Chairperson of the CRL Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva says there seems to be a competition among some informal pastors to outdo each other.
“These kinds of practices were among the reasons why the CRL Rights Commission had to undertake a study to investigate the commercialisation of religion and the abuse of the people’s belief systems.”
In a statement Tiger Brands the company that makes Doom warned of the risks of spraying the substance saying it is unsafe to spray Doom or any aerosol onto people’s faces.
“Doom has been formulated to kill specific insects which are detailed on the cans, and the packaging has very clear warnings which must be adhered to.”
