November 11, 2016

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 11-11-2016

The Johannesburg Roads agency (JRA) is urging motorists to be careful after flash floods left a trail of destruction in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.

At least six people have died and several people injured with a 3-year-old girl from Alexandra still missing.

The flash floods also caused dozens of vehicles to be swept away and dwellings damaged by the floods on Wednesday.

Johannesburg Metro Police’s Edna Mamonyane says the situation on the roads is a disaster.

“A truck went into nine cars on the N3 and four people were killed. We’ve had to rescue hundreds of people from the water, we are hoping the waters will go down so that we can continue our efforts.”

The devastation caused by the flash floods have united the country with hundreds of photographs and videos being shared on social media of valiant South Africans pulling stranded motorists and taxi passengers to safety.

One video, which has been shared on social media and has gone viral, shows a group of men who made a human chain to help passengers off two taxis ‚ alongside messages of appreciation for their efforts.

Meanwhile the SA Weather Service has warned severe thunderstorms today with possible heavy rainfall, hail, flash flooding and strong winds are expected over Gauteng as well as the Highveld and escarpment of Mpumalanga, southern and western parts of Limpopo, eastern parts of the North West province and the Free State as well as the northern and western parts of KZN.
