As drought conditions continue to ravage the country, the Department of Water and Sanitation is urging communities and businesses to save water as dam levels across South Africa continue to plunge.
According to the department, the national storage of the 211 dams in the country is now at 49, 0% and still dropping with the Vaal Dam level at an average of 26, 6%.
Meanwhile water shortages is affecting some areas in Lenasia, Lenasia South and Zakariyya Park which has been without water for almost two days.
This comes after a spike in water consumption which has seen the Lenasia high reservoir being strained for supply.
Local ward councillor Kishore Badal says residents must reduce consumption as the need for water is exceeding supply.
“The reservoir is running very low so with the result the pumping is becoming more difficult. Areas affected by it will be of course Lenasia, Zakariyya Park and Hospital Hills (Lenasia South).
Badal says water trucks have been dispatched to Zakariyya Park.
“Arrangements are made for three trucks to go in today. Two will be roving and one will be fixed at the garage at the entrance.”
Badal says while the water situation is serious but not critical in Lenasia, residents must reduce consumption which will allow the reservoir to recover.
