Joburg Water: Lenasia Water Levels Critical – Residents Urged to Save Water

October 31, 2016

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 31-10-2016

Lenasia residents have been advised to use water sparingly to avoid water shortages.

This comes after the city of Johannesburg failed to achieve the required 15% reduction in its water consumption.

The city says since the announcement of level 2 water restrictions last month, dams in the Vaal River system have declined to 51%, while the Vaal dam dipped below 30%.

Joburg Water’s Tidimalo Chuene says over the weekend there was a spike in water consumption due to the current heatwave gripping Gauteng which has seen reservoirs being strained for supply.

“At the moment the Lenasia high reservoir is quickly running out of water and in order to avoid serious water shortages we urge residents to reduce water consumption to immediate household needs such as drinking, cooking and bathing.”

Chuene says this will allow the reservoir to recover and avoid water shortages in the area.
