Three suspects have been arrested following a shooutout with police on the M1 Highway in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.
It’s understood police were following a lead about a suspicious vehicle with four occupants that were intending to rob customers depositing cash at a bank in Rivonia.
The police’s Kay Makhubele says the suspects fled the scene after police approached the vehicle.
“They gave chase and when they arrived at the bridge construction which is in Marlboro, they started shooting at the police and the police shot at them. The dropped the car and tried to run away, but they were cornered by the police and arrested.”
Makhubela says police are still searching for one suspect who remains on the run.
He says there were no serious injuries reported.
Makhubela says the arrested suspects have been charged with possession of unlicensed firearms, armed robbery and hijacking a motor vehicle and are expected to appear in the Sandon Magistrates Court soon.
