While the water and sanitation department is hopeful that expected rainfall in January next year will push up the Vaal Dam levels, the latest figures show the dam is now at just 22%.
Last week Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane said water levels at the Vaal Dam are decreasing at a rate of 0.8% week on week.
Yesterday social cohesion activist Yusuf Abramjee tweeted: “the 22% level of the Vaal Dam while a message on social media from Suzanne Clarke said the level is is extremely low and there needs to be urgent intervention, especially considering that from 18% down it is apparently just mud and sludge. This basically means we have 4% of actual water.”
Operation Hydrate’s Yaseen Theba says they have been in contact with the water and sanitation department and national disaster regarding the Vaal Dam and the current drought affecting the country.
“We are continuing to collect funds so that we can rollout our borehole project. Over the past few weeks we’ve dug an approximate 13 boreholes and we continuing with that. We realise that we have to create more sustainable solutions for communities so they become self-dependent.”
The Vaal Dam is part of the Vaal River system which consists of 14 dams that services mainly the Gauteng province, with at least 13 million users.
