Following the death of a man in car accident after hitting rocks on the N12 highway, residents of Lenasia are rallying together to make the stretch of road safer for motorists.
Ebrahim (Babes) Karolia passed away this week after his car rolled when it hit a rock on the N12 West heading towards Lenasia after the Golden Highway exit.
Spokesperson Sheraaz Hassam says the community of Lenasia decided to get together to try and make the N12 highway safe for motorists to return home to their loved ones.
“We lost a number of people at the very same stretch of road and we’ve done this operation before and it was successful. It stopped for a while and now it started again (rocks on the highway) and we’ve decided we have to do something. It’s time we as residents of Lenasia start taking control and looking after the safety and wellbeing of our community.”
However an anonymous caller to Radio Islam says the initiative would be a fruitless exercise.
“Just driving along this stretch of road I noticed tons of rocks everywhere. You remove some from the edge of the road but 5 meters in the bush they’ll find tons of rocks. We need to find another way to win this battle.”
“Operation Clean Up” on the N12 is expected to take place between the Lenasia off-ramps towards death bend on the N12 East & from death bend towards the Lenasia off ramps on the N12 West on Saturday.
Volunteers will be meeting at Freeway Plaza in Lenasia at 2pm ahead of the clean-up operation.
