A Palestinian filmmaker says the Israel-Palestine conflict should not be referred to as a conflict but rather an occupation of Palestine by Israel.
The United Nations Department of Public Information together with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and the government of the Kingdom of Sweden is hosting a three-day International Media Seminar on Peace in the Middle East in Pretoria.
The seminar hosted annually, explores the opportunities that exist for media to play a pivotal role as agents of peace by increasing dialogue between Israeli’s and Palestinians.
Imad Burnat, producer of the Oscar nominated film “5 Broken Cameras” says there is no conflict in Palestine, but rather an occupation because there is no equality between Israelis and Palestinians, as they do not have a navy or air force.
Imad made this film over five years, and the title refers to the five cameras that were variously smashed in action during that time.
Burnat says as Palestinians they face problems on a daily basis from the Israelis.
“I have lived all my life under occupation and the facts on the ground, you cannot feel that if you don’t live and experience the life under occupation.”
He says he is not diplomatic or political and made “5 Broken Cameras” because he wanted to tell the story of his life in Bil’in to the world and be part of the Palestinian struggle with his camera.
“I know the media tell one side of the story. They don’t tell the real story, how the people live.”
Burnat says while the Palestinians want a solution to the occupation, it is out of their hands and he doubts that Israel, the international community, the US and Europe will make it happen.
