New Democratic Alliance (DA) mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba has told Radio Islam he is thankful to the residents of Lenasia who put him into power.
The Black Like Me founder was elected to the position this week after receiving 144 votes beating the African National Congress’ (ANC) Parks Tau who received 125 votes.
Mashaba says he has received overwhelming support from the Lenasia community.
“The reason why I am a mayor today, Lenz has substantially contributed to this and I’d like to thank them for it and I pledge my support to them. I am just asking them to be patient, I am taking over a huge responsibility, and I need time to put systems in place.”
Mashaba says he will be putting together a mayoral committee tomorrow to deliver on the mandate given by the voters which includes fighting unemployment, eradicating crime and tackling corruption.
“We need to reignite our economy, we need to get Johannesburg to work again and unfortunately we don’t have time on our side. I’ve got four and a half million residents of this city expecting us to deliver.”
Mashaba says while he part of a coalition government, he is not opposed to consulting and working with former mayor Parks Tau.
