Battle for Valhalla Masjid Continues

August 19, 2016

The Thaba Tshwane Islamic Centre Trust says it will lodging a formal complaint against a member of The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Commission) for alleged Islamophobic statements.

The CRL Rights Commission yesterday met with representatives of the Trust which was granted permission by the City Of Tshwane to build a masjid in Valhalla in Tshwane.

The Trust laid a complaint to the CRL Commission about the challenges they have been facing to build the masjid as well as social media statements allegedly made by Richard Botha which they claim are bordering on islamophobia.

Tshwane Mayor Sputla Kgosientso Ramokgopa officially handed over the title deed for a piece of land to the Muslim community of Valhalla for the building of a masjid earlier this year.

Spokesperson for the Trust Yusuf Abramjee says Botha compared a masjid to a brothel on a recent radio show and also never declared he was a member of the CRL Commission which was only discovered ahead of the meeting.

“We want him expelled from the commission immediately. We have raised our concerns with the commission who seemed to be agreeing with us, that most if not all those comments on social media were Islamophobic and they undertook to probe the matter.”

Chairperson of the CRL Commission Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva announced the commission would continue to address the concerns by engaging with the different communities affected by the matter including the City of Tshwane.
