US Police Hunt for New York Imam’s Killer

August 14, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-08-14

New York City police are on the hunt for a man who fatally shot an Imam of the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid in Queens in the USA.

Police say video surveillance showed 55-year-old Maulana Akonjee and 64-year-old Thara Uddin were fatally shot in the head in the Ozone Park section by a man dressed in a dark polo shirt and shorts who approached them from behind as they left the masjid shortly before Zuhr salaah on Saturday.

It’s reported the man then fled the scene with the gun still in his hand.

The polices Deputy Inspector Henry Sautner say they haven’t determined a motive for the attack and that there’s no indication the men were targeted because of their faith.

“There’s nothing in the preliminary investigation to indicate that they were targeted because of their faith.”

However members of the Bangladeshi Muslim community served by the masjid are concerned it could be a hate crime.

More than 100 people attended the rally on Saturday night and chanted “We want justice.”

Akonjee’s daughter Naima says her father didn’t have “any problems with anyone”.
