Car Guard Refuses Bribe, Gets Thieves Arrested

August 10, 2016

A 27-year-old car guard has been praised for his character after he refused to take a bribe from thieves who wanted to steal a car in the area that he was patrolling.

It’s understood Tshepo Molaoele who guards cars at the entrance of The Company’s Garden in St John’s Street, Cape Town noticed a VW Citigolf suspiciously driving around the area.

The car stopped and four men got out and one of them was holding a screwdriver

Speaking to Radio Islam, freelance journalist Ashraf Hendricks says Molaoele told him they wanted to steal his car, also a Citigolf.

“So these 4 guys got out and one them had a screw driver and as soon as they approached my car he asked them: ‘Hi what are you doing?’ They actually told him we are going to steal this car.”

Hendriks says Molaoele complained that what the suspects were doing was not right.

“The thieves said ‘ok we are going to offer you a thousand rand’ and Tsepo thought really quickly on his feet and he said ‘ok, that sounds great, but listen there are a lot of police around at the moment, can we please do this later’”?

Hendriks says Molaoele approached the Central City Improvement District (CCID) and together with the help of police dressed up as car guards set up a sting operation waiting for the suspects to return.

“When the thieves arrived Tsepo gave them the go ahead and said: ‘listen do what you need to do,’ and as soon as the thieves were about to steal my car, they were apprehended on the spot red handed.”

Hendriks says he personally rewarded Molaoele who did not indicate whether he was tempted to take the bribe or not but did tell him that he was proud of working as car guard and feels responsible for the area he patrols.
