Al Jama-ah has confirmed to Radio Islam that it has thrown a lifeline and extended a hand of friendship to the supporters of the National Freedom Party (NFP) by allowing them to vote for the party.
The NFP has been prevented from taking part in the polls after it failed to pay the necessary fees by the 2 June deadline.
Lawyers representing the NFP told the electoral court that exceptional circumstances led to the party not paying a deposit on time, to allow it to take part in the elections on the 3rd of August.
Al Jama-ah says while people have given their life for the right to vote for a party of their choice, the NFP’s more than a half million supporters have been disenfranchised by the electoral courts decision.
President, Ganief Hendriks told Radio Islam they received a request from the NFP for assistance in the event of the electoral court preventing them from contesting the elections.
“We had a 4 day meeting to deliberate on the matter and we reached a consensus that they will tell their supporters to vote for Al Jama-ah and that they will campaign by putting the logo on the ID’s of their supporters.”
Hendriks says there is no merger or coalition between the two parties’.
“Depending on the results, Al Jama-ah will try and assist them to retain the positions that they held before the elections as deputy mayors, councilors and staffers.”
Hendriks says the assistance extended to the NFP will not compromise on the Islamic values, principals and manifesto of the Al Jama-ah party.
