Qari Yusuf Noorbhai, one of the greatest Qur’an reciters of our time and former Imam of Nur-ul-Islam masjid in Lenasia has passed away.
Originally from Isipingo in KwaZulu-Natal, Qari Noorbhai who was in his seventies passed away at a hospital in Cape Town yesterday after a long illness.
Qari Noorbahi was a former teacher at the LMA madressa and hifz teacher at Rainbow masjid in Lenasia.
Moulana Imran Hoosein (Nabee) a former colleague who now resides in Australia told Ejaz Khan on Radio Islam’s ‘Sabaahul Muslim’ this morning that Qari Noorbhai was from the Ahlul Quran and always served as his inspitarion from his schooling years.
“Qari Saheb was always my pillar of strength and I never feared whilst I was Imam at Nur ul Islam masjid. He had a marvellous personality, he was always a wellwisher, very meticulous in terms of his dress and his recitation of the Qur’an e Karim.”
Radio Islam programmes manager Moulana Sulaimaan Ravat says the passing away of Qari Noorbhai is a sad day for the ummah.
Moulana Ravat says it was devastating to see Qari Noorbhai sick in a bed and hardly able to talk because he was a man so full of life, a bubbly personality, a man who had a presence in society and a master of calligraphy.
“We have lost a great reciter of the Qur’an, a great scholar and a great leader and especially a great loss for the Nur ul Islam Centre and for the residents of Lenasia.”
Moulana Ravat says the outpouring of grief and sympathy indicates Qari Noorbhai was loved across the world including by renowned personalities like Moulana Sulaiman Moola, Mufti Ismail Menk and many others.
Meanwhile Moulana Mohammad Karolia, a close friend says many people are not aware that Qari Noorbhai’s qiraat and tajweed certificate was signed by Mahmood Khalil Al Husri, a world famous Qari from Egypt.
“It was such a prized certificate that many years later when members of the Muslim World League saw it, they were shocked that somebody in the southern tip of Africa had an academic linage directly linked to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).”
Former colleague Moulana Mohammad Rafeeq Hathurani says Qari Noorbhai was absolutely generous and a man of generous disposition.
“He would have the last 50 Rand in his pocket, but if someone needed help and money, he would take the money and give it to them.”
A number of listeners called Radio Islam expressing their condolences and fond memories of Qari Noorbhai and one of Lenasia’s most prominent personalities.
Qari Noorbhai’s Janaza will take place at the Al-Quds Masjid in Cape Town today.
A special tribute programme will be held for Qari Noorbhai after Esha on Saturday at the Nur ul Islam Masjid in Lenasia.
