From Malabar to Mombasa

June 23, 2016

Ejaz Khan

This Morning, Radio Islam spoke to Nabeela Noorani, Founder of “Tales of the SisterHood” about Ramadaan and life in Kenya.

On the Muslim population in Mombasa, Kenya:
“Kenya as whole is not majority Muslim country. 2014 census shows 44 Million Muslims, which is still a lot. Our coastal city Mombasa, amongst others, is mostly Muslim.

A major part of the population is of Arab descent {Omani, Yemeni}

Lots of Indians, of which the Memons are the biggest “Gaam” (Grouping)… so big, they have an estate, They have 150 houses, their own Schools and colleges too.

Plenty of Swahili local Muslims, And Somalian as well.”

Why did you move to Mombasa, Kenya?
My Husband is Kenyan. After staying in South Africa for nearly 8 years we have tried to give it a trial run. My In-laws wanted to be closer to our kids.
Wonderful experience thus far!

On Ramadhan in Mombasa:
Ramadaan here is unlike anything in South Africa, although fasting hours are similar: Sehri ends at 5:06 am and we break our fasts at 18:20 PM.
3 hours before Iftaar Ramadaan Bazaar is open in central town… selling Kenyan Iftaar treats. At night, After Taraweeh, shoppers bazaar & Restaurants all open and you can get your eid shopping done till the early hours of the morning.

On why should Muslims should visit Kenya:
I would definitely recommend Kenya as a destination… It should be on Every Muslims list of all places to visit.
As you take a stroll, you are forced to walk through to the ancient streets, made to accommodate camels, horse and carts… you get lost in an Islamic era before our time.

On Tales of the SisterHood and its popularity:
Writing started here in Kenya , when I just came here!
Islamic centered stories, deals with issues that Muslims don’t want to talk about but affect us, whether we like to or not.
We’ve added Writers from all over the world. 11 000 followers now, messages of inspiration, we help where we can.
