From Leicester to Azaadville

June 21, 2016

Ejaz Khan

This Morning, Radio Islam’s Mufti Moosagie spoke to Ibrahim Hewitt, the Senior Editor of the Middle East Monitor.
He is spending Ramadaan in Azaadville, South Africa.

On Why the UK’s 21 hour fast feels easier than South Africa’s 12 hour one:

“The 1st few days were a bit harder, the air is thinner here, the mornings are colder (it is now summer in the UK)
But Alhamdulilah, now we’ve adjusted.”

The biggest difference of Ramadaan in UK and South Africa:

“Well, the main thing here in Azaadville is we have 4 Azaans during the day. The atmosphere is much more like you are in a muslim country than it is in the UK… there we just have alarm clocks.
It makes a big difference. Great feeling of togetherness, everyone fasting together, Alhamdulilah.”

On why South Africa and Azaadville in particular are close to his heart:

“This is where my journey to Islam started.
Have been coming to Azaadville from 1979. Seeing people of all races praying together in harmony is what attracted me to Islam.
It is very much like a homecoming every time I come here. Plus, my wife is from here.”

On the Middle East Monitor:

“The Middle East monitor is an online journal.
We seek to provide the alternative which you won’t find in the mainstream.
We do believe there is a an imbalance. Initially our focus was on Palestine but it has since expanded as our team of writers expanded.
We are quoted widely and read extensively.
Founded by Dr Daud Abdullah, We have good links with some of the main media providers in the Middle East.
We have a growing network of journalists, photographers in Gaza. etc
It’s a broad make up. It’s a great opportunity for especially Palestinian Journalists who do not get the opportunity to hone their skills and have their stories covered in a positive way.
Muslims are part of the debate, e.g Islamophobia stories… Muslims are part of the news on a daily basis… Muslims are covered in the media for the wrong reason nowadays and Islamophobes pick up on this… and that is what we seek to counter.”
