Renowned Zimbabwean scholar Mufti Ismail Menk says whenever he visits Dubai, he cannot leave without visiting a patient at the Rashid Hospital who inspires and gives him strength.
Mufti Menk who is currently performing Taraweeh and conducting tafseer programmes at the Bosmont Masjid in Johannesburg, is on a two day speaking tour in Dubai at the Rashid bin Muhammad Ramadan Gathering in Khawaneej.
Mahmood, a patient at the hospital according to Mufti Menk serves as an inspiration to many people.
“How I initially met him is a long story but for many years he has been paralysed and cannot speak except via the movement of his eyelids. Yet he replies my whatsapp messages and keeps in touch,” Mufti Menk wrote on his Facebook page.
He says as Mahmood blinks his eyes, a specialist nurse translates what he is saying and relays it. It takes several minutes to say a single sentence but he is always determined.
“He explained to me how he will never question the Decree of the Almighty and that he is happy with whatever the Almighty has chosen for him. He has a screen in front of him on which he reads the Qur’aan and listens to lectures. He keeps in touch with whatever he wants to. Subhanallah.”
Mufti Menk says people complain about minor issues in their lives while Mahmood who besides his condition is happy with Allah’s choice for him.
“For many years, his brother spends time with him every day and people have not stopped visiting him. It’s the love of this giant for the sake of the Almighty that draws people to him. Something about him is unique.”
He says many people including the nurses at the hospital who attend to Mahmood are motivated by him.
“It’s an honour to know this man. May the Almighty grant him miraculous recovery and all those who are ill or sickly, Aameen.”
