Israel Suspends Ramadan Permits for 83,000 Palestinians

June 09, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-06-09

Israel has suspended entry permits for 83,000 Palestinians during the holy month of Ramadan following a shooting in Tel Aviv that killed four people.

A statement from COGAT, the unit which manages civilian affairs in the occupied West Bank said: “All permits for Ramadan, especially permits for family visits from Judea and Samaria to Israel, are frozen.”

At least 83,000 Palestinians would be affected by the suspension, including 200 residents of Gaza who had received permits to visit relatives during Ramadan and attend prayers at the Al Aqsa Mosque.

The measure also effectively bans Palestinians from using Israel’s only international airport – Ben Gurion in Tel Aviv, forcing them to leave the country via Jordan or Egypt instead.
