May 30, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-05-30

A 43-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was doused with petrol, set alight and left for dead on the N17 toll road between Ermelo and Bethal in Mpumalanga.

It’s understood Goolam Docrat was hijacked on the outskirts of the town early this morning after leaving his home to go for Fajr salaah (early Morning Prayer).

Tollgate operators and security noticed the fire and stopped a passing motorist who assisted Docrat and transported him to the local hospital where he is currently in the intensive care unit.

The police’s Carla Prinsloo says the motive for the incident is not known.

“Police in Ermelo were informed about a man standing next to the road, the N17 between Ermelo and Bethal. Police were informed that he was apparently naked and that he had severe burn wounds. We opened a case of attempted murder which we are investigating.”

Docrat’s vehicle, a white Nissan NP400 was found nearby.

Prinsloo has appealed to the community to assist the police with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect/s.
