There has been outrage following revelations of fake Zam Zam water in South Africa.
Radio Islam has learnt that plastic bottles which bear the mark of being manufactured in South Africa are filled with normal tap water and being sold to unsuspecting retailers and the public as Zam Zam water.
Secretary General of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Moulana Ebrahim Bham has cautioned Muslims to be wary before buying Zam Zam water.
Moulana Bham says the fake “Zam Zam” water are packed into bottles and packaged into the white and blue boxes very similar to the ones from Makkah in Saudi Arabia.
“When it was verified and checked out, the water did not resemble the taste of Zam Zam at all.”
Muslims are advised to check for the following signs to determine if the Zam Zam water is fake or not.
According to a reputable source, the fake Zam Zam is packed into 5 litre bottles with a blue bottle cap and a label that is purple in color instead of blue.
The fake Zam Zam will also not have the words “Zam Zam” in Arabic and English machine stamped onto the bottle and not have the date of packaging in Makkah.
The plastic bottles of the fake “Zam Zam” is manufactured by a local South African company, which is clearly labeled at the bottom of the bottle.
The source has advised Muslims to only buy the 10 litre bottles of Zam Zam from reputable and large retailers and if possible request a taste of the water before purchasing.
The original Zam Zam is packed into 10 litre bottles with the words “Zam Zam” clearly machine stamped onto the cap and the bottle itself. It will also have a blue label and the date of packaging in Makkah.
