One suspect has died and two others are under police guard in hospital after shootout with police opposite the Trade Route Mall in Lenasia.
One other suspect has been arrested and another is on the run.
Its understood police received information about the hijacking of a white Toyota Fortuner by the five men in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg this afternoon.
The JMPD’s Wayne Minnaar says police are searching for the fifth suspect.
“As they approached the vehicle which had stopped at the traffic light, the suspects jumped into a Hyundai H1 and opened fire on the two officers. The officers returned fire injuring three suspects and one has since died in the Chris Hani Bara Hospital, two is under police guard and once has been arrested on the scene.”
Minnaar say the suspects will be charged with armed hijacking as well as possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
