Cachalia Accepts DA Nomination for Ekurhuleni Mayor

April 20, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-04-20

The son of struggle icons Amina and Yusuf Cachalia says South Africa has become the most unequal nation in the world.

Ghaleb Cachalia has accepted the DA’s nomination to run as Ekurhuleni mayor in this year’s local government elections set to take place on the 3rd of August.

The municipality is currently run by the ANC under Mayor Mondli Gungubele.

Cachalia says while he believed the ANC would forge a new South Africa based on human dignity and equality after Apartheid, the party has exploited the history of the country to cover-up its failures to provide basic services.

“Sadly, after 22 years of ANC government, we have been betrayed. The ANC has changed, and the ANC of Jacob Zuma is not the ANC of Nelson Mandela.”

He says he has never been a member of the ANC or any other party but the ANC was always in his blood.

“(But) over time my faith has been shattered.”

Cachalia says his vision for Ekurhuleni is an inclusive city where people who are struggling find opportunity and a hand up in life.

“The time has come for us to once again find our hope and aspiration. This is why I stand with the DA and will be campaigning as mayoral candidate to usher in an era of DA government in Ekurhuleni.”

Cachalia’s grandparents Ebrahim Asvat and Ahmed Cachalia campaigned with Mahatma Gandhi while his parents worked alongside former President Nelson Mandela and the ANC to end Apartheid.
